News Bits Round-Up

  • Independents and Democrats are more likely than Republicans to believe in the theory of evolution. (Link) via A Simple Desultory Philippic It’s depressing. How can our thoughts be so blindly sewn to our political identities. How? I will choose to believe these polls are manipulative, shady muck-ruckers.
  • “Such deep longing for God—and … repulsed—empty—no faith—no love—no zeal.—[The saving of] Souls holds no attraction—Heaven means nothing.” Some fascinating revelations from Mother Teresa’s letters. These letters came out a few years ago, I remember hearing about it in NPR. (Link) via Amitava Kumar.
  • A 300 second interview with Abhishek and Aishwarya. (Link) via Fimiholic. I was oddly touched that Aish kept the rings from Guru.
  • All things kissing. On how to kiss. And the difference between how women and men look at kissing. Via India Uncut. Kissing is objectively, gender-in-a-vacuumly an excellent measure of relationship status. It just is. Cher had it right. Couldn’t you phrase this finding as “women-are-better-at-reading-body-language” vs. “women-place-more-importance-on-kissing”? I think you can. I think I will.
  • Check out this awesome radio show–WNYC’s Radio Lab via This American Life.
  • Hari Kunzru’s My Revolutions looks great. And Jabberwock’s review is as fabulous as ever. But what caught my eye was this line, “Back in his own youth, dreams were far more radical, concerned more with bringing alive a Utopian world of the imagination than coming to terms with the imperfect real one.” Isn’t that just right? Are our dreams ever anything but what we conjure up from our imagination?
  • And last but not least, in case you missed the public humiliation of one 18-yr-old South Carolina Miss Teen hopeful. (Link). It’s funny.
