Pay attention: This is not at all important
We already know the television media is biased. But did you also know they have nothing to say? (Despite the war, the economy, torture, health care, murders, floods, forest fires, kidnappings.) Inspired by Crabby Old Lady’s post and 30 minutes of CNN, I was going to start this whole thing where I keep tabs on “news stories” where literally nothing is happening. (But I am leaving for India in 3 days..so..plan scrapped.)
Various media figureheads quite clearly reach behind themselves and pull fresh manure from their behinds. They splash this pile of crap across their super bright, super dazzling wall screens and ask “strategists” to speak very loudly and sharply about the crap. The viewer has no choice but to shrug, and go, “wwhha..huh? Hmm, I don’t care about politics. I just care about paying $4/per gallon for gas. I don’t care about elections. I just care about how my dad will get medical care once my mom retires. I don’t care about campaigns, I just lost my job.”
In the past half hour of watching network news, there were three stories that sucked up much television energy. The first I flipped through was MSNBC’s expose on Stephen Colbert’s running gag of McCain’s boring speech. The anchorwomen giggled happily as McCain’s head danced around to some 80s song that I didn’t watch long enough to identify.
The second was CNN’s piece on how Obama and McCain have both flip-flopped while they both talk about uniting America. Footage was shown of how they have said similar things in the campaign trail about each other and their own selves. You see, despite the fact that these two differ on every conceivable policy position as well as countless personal character traits, they are secretly the same? Or something. Well, not really. But think about it.
And the last (and I had to direct my cynicism to cyber space), it’s breaking news that Obama might have, possibly, could have, there is a chance have flip-flopped on Iraq. How? Well, CNN is not sure. Reporters breathlessly asked Obama his morphing position on troop withdrawal. “But your website says A.” “I continue to say A. See A.” “But how do you mean A?”. The press coverage ended and a helpful CNN political analyst asked a “strategist” to talk about the secret, in-depth meaning behind the word, “refined” for “the sake of the viewer.” I thought Obama was talking about sugar or something. Thanks CNN.
Update: Before I could press save. The 4th breaking news. A jazz singer sings the national anthem. It’s the black national anthem. We are asked to read blogs to learn more about what to think.
Update 2: Before I could finish editing my post. The 5th news piece. Fact or fiction? Women or black people (or queer people or disabled people or non-Christians) have never become US Presidents. Fact. That’s… correct. Hollywood actors has paved the path in fictional history long before real-lifers. This matters in a fictional world.
