Forced to Marry (a documentary)

December 28, 2008

Via Muslimah Media Watch

According to the movie Forced to Marry, “more British people are forced into marriage in Pakistan than in any other country.” This fascinating documentary follows staff from the “Forced Marriage Unit” of the British Foreign Office, who find British national girls who have been forced into marriage to Pakistani men by their families. The film tells the stories of 4 different rescues in rural Pakistan. One of the rescues was done in Punjab, India.

You can watch the whole documentary on YouTube here (or click the video below). It does an admirable job untangling forced marriages and arranged marriages (one of the rescuers had an arranged marriage). And an equally laudable job separating Islam from forced marriages. I also found its sympathetic and non-villainous portrayal of the parents to be really refreshing as well.
