She looks visibly afraid of the turmeric.
Poking the bright yellow plastic bag as if checking to see if it was alive, she asks, “is there anything else that might sound like ‘taarmayrick”?”
“Is it a spice?”
I walk away. Even as a part of me feels sorry for her, I don’t want to deal with her a minute longer. Someone had told her that turmeric mixed in with milk and almonds was medicinal. “There’s no scientific evidence for this.” An unsolicited chime.
“Does it taste bad?,” she asks.
She leaves quickly. Anxiety intact.
